In 2009, Malaysia’s broadband penetration rate stood at only 22.6%. Green Packet’s P1— Malaysia’s first and leading WiMAX telecommunications company—wanted to increase this to 50% in 2 years. This meant a challenging goal of connecting 1,000 homes a day.

Making broadband affordable, faster and better was no simple feat. Furthermore, bringing this to homes almost immediately was also close to impossible.

Unfazed by these daunting goals, P1 created a programme called P1 direct, a service that made it easy for users to get internet access in only 3 days.

In 2008, P1 also worked with Sunway Group to create Wireless@Sunway, providing wireless broadband access to over 80% of home and business users and more than 2 million visitors.

Additionally, P1 partnered Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on the Wireless@KL project. This created over 1,500 hotspots, providing free wireless broadband to over 130,000 users in Kuala Lumpur.

Unsatisfied with its progress, P1 built Wireless@Penang and WiMAX@Penang with the Penang state government. These services delivered broadband internet to densely populated locations and areas with high numbers of tourists, making Penang one of the first cities in the world to offer full WiMAX connectivity.

Equipping Malaysian homes with PCs

In 2008, Malaysian households still had a low rate of PC ownership.

To overcome this, P1 worked with Acer Netbook and Intel to create PC bundled programmes to get PCs to Malaysian homes. Within weeks, more than 10,000 homes received new devices.

Working with Intel and the rest of the WiMAX ecosystem, P1 continued to tirelessly develop bundled programs to facilitate ownership of both PCs and broadband access.

Fast forward to 2018, Green Packet played a pivotal role in replacing TV antenna technology with modern TV boxes in Malaysian households.

Green Packet won a contract to supply up to 3.6 million set-top boxes to MYTV, which was tasked with rolling out digital terrestrial TV (DTTV) services nationwide.

These set-top boxes were also distributed free-of-charge to Malaysians in the lower-income B40 group.
