One of Malaysia’s main cash crops is chilli, which requires meticulous care to cultivate. In particular, the fertilisers need to be mixed very precisely every day for the crops to grow well.

Farmers traditionally spent a significant amount of time manually preparing the fertiliser mix, which can lead to inconsistency and wastage. This results in inaccurate and sub-optimal conditions for the crops, thereby affecting yield quality.

In October 2017, a smart fertigation system was developed for a 1.5 acre chilli farm.

The game-changing solution

Through the Sensor Hub for Smart Agriculture solution, farmers can
provide more accurate fertilisation as well as monitor crop and fertilisation
conditions anytime, anywhere.

First, the fertigation system enables accurate mixing of fertilisers, distributing exact and consistent amounts of fertiliser to the chilli crops.

The Sensor Hub subsequently monitors the fertigation system, providing environmental data such as temperature and soil condition.

The hub then sends data to the Monitoring Portal where farmers can oversee fertiliser concentration, tank capacity, and environmental information on a dashboard. Parameters like soil electrical conductivity, pH as well as temperature and humidity can also be tracked in real-time.

The impact: higher yields, lower cost, reduced manpower

Through the IoT solution, farmers experience a minimum 20% yield improvement on average every season. At the same time, fertiliser usage is reduced by 30% and 8 hours of manpower is saved on a daily basis.

All this also provided an innovative supply chain to create a reliable and continuous sales channel for farmers.
